Planting blueberry bushes in a containers is one of my favorite things to do! It’s also a great way to enjoy fresh blueberries if you don’t have a large garden. They would do great on a balcony or deck that gets 6+ hours of sunlight each day. Blueberries are packed with antioxidants and other nutrients that are great for your health. Whether you want to enjoy fresh blueberries for snacking or cooking, planting a blueberry bush in a container is a great experience!
I use a minimum of a 5 gallon grow bag and as they get larger I go up to a 10 gallon grow bag. To Make the grow bags look nice you can drop them in a DIY wooden Sleeve or a wicker basket. If you use a plastic or ceramic pot be sure they have holes in the bottom. A concrete pot I really like is the Kante 20″. You can also use a plastic or ceramic container, or even a wooden barrel if you prefer a more rustic look.
Choose the blueberry bush that’s right for you and your zone! We grow 2 different kinds here. One is a hybrid and they are great producers in container! Some popular blueberry varieties for containers include Top Hat, Dwarf Northsky, and Sunshine Blue. Make sure to choose a variety that is self-pollinating, or that has a compatible variety nearby for cross-pollination.
Before planting, prepare the container with a well-draining potting mix that is rich in organic matter. I use a combination of 50% Espoma Organic Potting Soil Mix & 50% Espoma Organic Land and Sea Gourmet Compost. I also add in Espoma Berry-Tone. Fill the container with the potting mix to within an inch of the rim.
Place your container in a sunny location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Your Blueberry bush needs plenty of sun to ripen properly, so make sure the container is not shaded.
Now it’s time to plant your blueberry bush. Carefully remove the blueberry bush from it’s nursery pot gently loosen and score the roots. Place the blueberry bush in the center of the container, making sure that the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Backfill the container with the remaining potting mix, pressing down lightly to remove any air pockets.
Water the blueberry bush thoroughly to give it a good start. Blueberries need regular watering, especially during the growing season, so make sure the container has good drainage and doesn’t dry out. I water mine daily and when it’s really hot I tend to water them twice a day.
With proper care, your blueberry bush will produce delicious fruit for many years to come!
