If you’re looking to grow your own strawberries, planting bare root strawberries is a great way to get started. Bare root strawberries are small plants that can be planted straight into your garden, and they’re often sold in bundles of 10 or more. This year we planted 20 bare root strawberries in fabric containers! So excited for them to give us strawberries! Here are six easy steps to follow when planting bare root strawberries in your garden or in a pot.
Location
The first step in planting bare root strawberries is to choose a location in your garden that gets plenty of sunlight. Strawberries need at least six hours of direct sunlight each day, so choose a spot that gets plenty of sun in your garden or on your deck.
Prepare Your Pot
Once you’ve chosen a location, it’s time to prepare the container. The containers I used this year are the 15 gallon fabric grow bags folded in half. I then add in combination of potting soil, compost and organic fertilizer. Mix it all together!
Soak The Roots
I gently separate each bareroot from the bag and then soak the roots in water for a few hours. This helps the roots absorb water and nutrients more easily once they’re planted.
Preparing The Container & Planting
I use my hand or garden shovel to make a hole large enough to accommodate the roots of the bare root strawberries. Well the rule is space your bare roots 12-18 inches apart I pushed the limit this year and planted them a bit closer by putting 5 roots in each container. You should only plant 4 this will allow them a bit more room to stretch out. Carefully place each bare root strawberry in its hole, making sure the roots are spread out evenly. Then, fill in the hole with soil until the top of the root crown is level with the soil surface.
Water and Mulch
It’s now time to water your newly planted bare root strawberries thoroughly! Once watered I add a layer of mulch around the plants to help the soil retain moisture and prevent weeds from growing you can also use straw!
With these five easy steps, you can plant bare root strawberries in your garden and enjoy fresh, delicious strawberries for snacking, canning or freezing!
Some additional tips to keep in mind when planting bare root strawberries:
– Plant your bare root strawberries as soon as possible after you receive them.
– If you have multiple bundles of bare root strawberries, label them so you know which variety is which.
– Water your bare root strawberries regularly, especially during dry spells or on hot days. They need about one inch of water per week.
– Fertilize your bare root strawberries with an organic fertilizer. Be sure to follow the instructions on the fertilizer package for best results.
